Volunteer Assisted Tax Prep

If you'd like to prepare your taxes yourself you can use ICAN! E-file. ICAN! E-File is FREE web-based software that will help you do your federal and state of Michigan taxes for FREE. Taxes are easy to do with I-CAN! E-File and you don't need to be a computer expert. Answer a few questions and I-CAN! E-File will prepare your tax forms for you and help you efile. There are hundreds of VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites scattered all over Michigan where you can have an IRS-trained volunteer prepare and efile your state and federal tax return for you for free. You must meet income requirements to be eligible, but generally anyone who qualifies for the Earned Income Tax Credit will be eligible for free VITA help.

 Do you qualify for Federal EITC?

  • Workers with three or more children who earned less than $43,998 (single parent) or less than $49,078 (married) in 2011 are eligible for a credit of up to $5,751.
  • Workers with two children who earned less than $40,964 (single parent) or less than $46,044 (married) in 2011 are eligible for a credit of up to $5,112.
  • Workers with one child who earned less than $36,052 (single parent) or less than $41,132 (married) in 2011 are eligible for a credit of up to $3,094.
  • Workers without a qualifying child who earned less than $13,660 (single parent) or less than $18,740 (married) in 2011 are eligible for a credit of up to $464.
  • If households had investment income in 2011, it must be below $3,150 in order to qualify for EITC.
